Spain fires DSN communications officer over Ceuta migrant alert
The Spanish government dismissed the Department of National Security (DSN) communications officer on 31 July 2026 after she posted an alert on the DSN website reporting that more than 49 000 migrants had entered the enclave of Ceuta irregularly via the Tarajal spur and beach. The alert was removed shortly after publication and the official was placed on leave, with General Loreto Hurtado ordering the immediate dismissal.
The figure was the largest single‑day influx recorded in Ceuta since May 2021. Subsequent estimates raised the total number of arrivals to between 60 000 and 70 000. The Ministry of the Interior later gave an interim estimate of about 50 000 migrants. Former CNI director Jorge Dezcallar argued that such a movement could not have escaped CNI monitoring, stating that “50 000 people would not move without the CNI noticing.”
The episode has sparked political debate over the handling of the crisis, the role of intelligence services, and the broader migration pressures on Spain’s North‑African frontier.
