Spain doctors warn of rising vacation sports injuries
Doctors at Hospital Quirónsalud in Marbella and Huelva caution that abruptly resuming intense activities such as running, padel, beach volleyball or long mountain hikes after periods of sedentary work can overload muscles, tendons and joints. Dr. Francisco Aranda Murillo explains that the best prevention is maintaining a regular, moderate exercise routine rather than sudden high‑intensity effort.
In August, specialists observed an increase in fractures, sprains, ligament tears and tendon ruptures, including calf, Achilles and biceps injuries. Unstable surfaces like sand and uneven mountain paths further raise the risk of ankle sprains and knee problems, as noted by Dr. Ángel Heredia Sulbarán. The doctors advise gradual preparation and avoiding the false sense of safety that some recreational sports may give.
Overall, the guidance emphasizes progressive conditioning and awareness of terrain to reduce injury rates during the holiday season.
