Spain driver's license points system shows 20-year impact on road safety

Two decades after the implementation of the driver's license points system in Spain, data from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) reveals significant shifts in driver behavior. Seat belt usage has increased from 72% in 2006 to 98% in 2024. Additionally, the rate of positive alcohol tests during preventive controls has dropped from 2.6% to 1% over the same period.

Despite these improvements, speeding remains a major issue. In Vigo, speeding accounted for over 60% of points deducted in 2024, with 14,030 points lost to various speeding infractions. Conversely, violations involving mobile phone use and running red lights have seen a decline in points lost compared to 2014.

Regarding substance use, the combination of alcohol and drugs was responsible for 49.9% of traffic accidents in 2025, according to the Instituto Nacional de Toxicología y Ciencias Forenses. While alcohol-related sanctions have increased in volume, experts suggest this may be due to more frequent and rigorous roadside testing. Over the 20-year period, the system has resulted in the withdrawal of licenses for 322,083 individuals, though 91% of those sanctioned have not lost their driving privileges again.
