Spain electric vehicle sales surpass diesel registrations sevenfold
In September, electric vehicle registrations in Spain reached a historic milestone, with pure electric car sales outnumbering diesel registrations by seven to one. According to data from industry associations Anfac, Faconauto, and Ganvam, 17,366 pure electric cars were registered, accounting for 18.5% of the monthly total, while diesel vehicles represented only 2.52% of the market with 2,363 units.
One in three cars sold during the month was either pure electric or plug-in hybrid, totaling 31,945 units—a 56% increase compared to the previous year. Industry experts attribute this growth to the implementation of the ‘Plan Auto+’, a 400-million-euro government incentive program approved in July that offers up to 4,500 euros in aid for electric vehicle purchases.
Jaime Barea, president of Ganvam, noted that while these incentives are stimulating demand and making mobility more affordable, current subsidies are lower than those provided in previous plans relative to the average vehicle price, requiring a higher financial effort from consumers.
