Spain electrical grid capacity delays 80,000 homes

A report by BBVA Research warns that insufficient electrical grid capacity is becoming a major bottleneck for the residential sector in Spain, delaying more than 80,000 projected homes.

While Spain possesses sufficient aggregate electricity generation, the capacity is not located where residential demand is highest. This mismatch requires new substations or grid reinforcements, a process that can take between five and eight years due to administrative procedures, environmental assessments, and construction requirements. The most affected provinces include Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Castellón, Toledo, Granada, Cádiz, Almería, Zaragoza, Lleida, and Jaén.

In the Community of Madrid, the report notes that while available land could support 126,000 new homes over the next five years, current firm electrical capacity can only supply approximately 40,000, or about 32% of the projected total. Furthermore, 88% of distribution network nodes are reported to have less than 1 MW of available capacity, which is insufficient for large-scale residential or economic projects.

Demand is expected to rise by nearly 45% by 2030 as homes, industry, transport, and data centers increasingly rely on electrification, intensifying competition for available grid capacity.
