Spain enforces five‑year licence renewal for drivers over 65, influencer spends €6,000 after seven attempts

The Spanish Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has reminded that drivers born between 1956 and 1961 must renew their driving licence every five years after turning 65. The validity for cars and motorcycles drops from ten to five years at that age, and driving with an expired licence incurs a €200 fine. Renewal requires only a medical check at an authorized centre; no additional theory or practical tests are needed, though medical conditions can shorten the period further.

A young Spanish influencer, part of the "Gemelos Viajeros" duo, publicised his personal struggle to obtain a licence. After seven failed tests, 100 practical lessons and nearly €6,000 in fees, he finally passed in Soria, alleging that DGT procedures and long waiting lists in Madrid and Segovia delayed his progress. The influencer’s story, which went viral on Instagram and X, also sparked criticism about road‑safety standards after he was involved in a subsequent car accident.
