Spain expands AI-driven digital transformation in public services and smart cities

Guadalupe González Taño, director general of Digital Transformation for the Canary Islands government, said the administration has made digital transformation a strategic priority, using artificial intelligence and data‑driven tools to accelerate public services. Early projects include reducing processing times for dependency benefits and establishing a flexible, evidence‑based approach to measuring outcomes.

At the same time, European cities are adopting AI‑enhanced video analytics and intelligent transportation systems to improve traffic flow, detect incidents, manage parking and lower emissions. The global smart‑city market, projected at $900 billion today, is expected to exceed $3.7 trillion by 2030, with dozens of initiatives already operating across 113 European cities.
