Spain expands domestic and community composting initiatives
Sogama is expanding domestic composting programs in Spain by incorporating 100 households from Ribeira and Outes. The initiative includes the free distribution of 100 composters, with 50 allocated to each municipality. These 400-liter containers are manufactured from recycled materials and must be placed outdoors in contact with the soil to facilitate decomposition.
To support the program, Sogama will provide instructional manuals and offers in-person courses to participating families upon request from local councils. The goal is to produce high-quality compost that meets current regulations for use in gardens, orchards, and agricultural lands.
In Asturias, the Cogersa network currently manages 40 community composting areas across 33 municipalities, involving approximately 1,200 families and 80 large producers. During the first half of 2026, this network managed 30.8 tons of bio-waste. These developments are being highlighted at the XV National Composta en Red seminar held in Asturias.
