Spain expands green hydrogen infrastructure across multiple sectors

Spain is seeing a significant expansion in green hydrogen infrastructure across various sectors, including aviation, industry, healthcare, and education.

Aena has signed a contract to install the first hydrogen production and supply plant at Bilbao Airport to support aviation decarbonization. In the industrial sector, Repsol has begun construction on a 100 MW electrolyzer at the Petronor refinery in Muskiz, aiming to produce 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually by 2029. Additionally, the Junta de Andalucía has authorized Capital Energy’s Sierra Sur H2 Verde plant, a 200 MW project in Seville involving a 537 million euro investment for hydrogen and renewable methanol production.

In public services, the Dr. Negrín University Hospital in Gran Canaria is piloting a system to generate green hydrogen from renewable methanol to meet thermal and mobility needs. Educational initiatives are also advancing, with the IES Mediterráneo in La Línea de la Concepción launching a pilot hydrogen plant for vocational training in industrial chemistry. Experts in Valladolid are also advocating for strategic alliances to integrate clean fleets and connected transport into the city's mobility model.
