Spain expands health screening for seniors and newborns

The Balearic Islands health ministry has introduced a primary‑care protocol to screen all residents aged over 70 for malnutrition. Funded with €18,000, the program uses the MNA test and a five‑step pathway to identify at‑risk patients, assess social factors, and provide early treatment within primary‑care settings. Training sessions and outreach have already been conducted for local health professionals.

In Galicia, the regional health council reported that neonatal screening of 500,000 babies detected 1,431 serious conditions, achieving over 99.95% coverage. The programme includes tests for endocrine‑metabolic disorders, hearing loss, and critical congenital heart defects, enabling early intervention and improving survival and quality of life for affected infants. Additional funding of €14.5 million was approved for a high‑technology proton‑therapy centre to support advanced medical imaging and treatment.

Both initiatives aim to standardise early detection, optimise resource use, and improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations in Spain.
