Spain expands traffic enforcement with 3,621 radars and stricter ITV sticker rules

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has overseen a 37% increase in traffic radars since 2021, bringing the national total to 3,621 devices. In the last year alone, 226 new radars were installed, with Catalonia hosting the highest count at 936, followed by Andalucía (462) and Castilla y León (376). The growth reflects authorities’ push to enhance road safety and adapt to evolving mobility needs.

Separately, Spanish vehicle‑inspection regulations now limit drivers to displaying only the most recent ITV (Inspección Técnica de Vehículos) sticker. Older stickers must be removed, as multiple stickers can obstruct the driver’s view. Enforcement officers may issue fines ranging from €80 to €200 if excess stickers compromise visibility, and failure to display a valid sticker can also be penalised. The rule also specifies placement of other windshield stickers, such as environmental labels and toll devices, to preserve clear sight lines.
