Spain expands V16 emergency beacon use and map ahead of 2026 mandate

The V16 emergency beacon, introduced in 2026 to replace traditional warning triangles, is becoming a central element of Spain’s road‑safety system. The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) operates a live map that displays every active V16 alert, giving drivers real‑time insight into incidents and helping authorities monitor road conditions. The map shows the approximate location of each beacon activation and provides visual cues for sections of road with higher alert density, aiding trip planning and safety awareness.

In the Basque Country, the regional police (Ertzaintza) have highlighted an additional benefit: the beacon’s built‑in geolocation can automatically transmit a vehicle’s position to traffic‑management centres, allowing rapid assistance for motorists who are stranded or disoriented. While the DGT maintains that drivers must still call emergency number 112, the automatic location feature could speed the response of rescue services, especially in remote areas.
