Spain experiences 1,430 earthquakes in southeast region

Since August 14, 2026, southeastern Spain has experienced a significant seismic series, with the National Geographic Institute (IGN) recording 1,430 earthquakes. The series includes two major tremors of magnitude Mw 4.8 on August 15 and 18. While most events were of magnitude 2 or less and caused only minor destruction, 122 tremors were felt by the population, causing widespread public concern. The IGN has processed over 21,760 inquiries via its digital platforms following the activity.

In a related scientific context, researchers have conducted simulations regarding the potential for a tsunami in the region. A study published in ‘Pure and Applied Geophysics’ modeled a hypothetical magnitude 7 earthquake occurring on the Averroes fault located beneath the Alboran Sea. The simulation suggests that such an event could trigger waves reaching nearly three meters in height along the Mediterranean coast, with the Almería coastline, specifically Balerma, identified as a high-risk area due to its proximity to the fault.
