Spain experiences severe flooding and storms across Mediterranean coast

Severe storms and torrential rainfall across Spain's Mediterranean coast have caused significant disruption, including one fatality in Olivella, Barcelona, where a driver was trapped by rising waters. The extreme weather has led to widespread flooding, suspended school classes, and major transport interruptions.

In Catalonia and Valencia, the impact has been heavy, with some areas recording up to 90 or 100 liters of rain per square meter in a single hour. These conditions forced the closure of several metro lines, caused flight delays and cancellations at airports like El Prat and Valencia, and disrupted regional rail services. Emergency services have responded to hundreds of incidents involving flooding, electrical issues, and fallen objects.

The weather system has also affected the Region of Murcia, where red alerts were issued for areas like Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón. While rainfall has begun to subside in some regions, meteorological agency AEMET maintains various alerts across the eastern peninsula, including orange alerts for the Balearic Islands due to the risk of intense storms and hail.
