Spain explores leadership in European tourism technology sovereignty
Spain is positioned to potentially lead the development of a sovereign European tourism technology ecosystem. Discussions at the Tourism Innovation Summit in Seville highlighted the need for Europe to increase its digital autonomy by developing and controlling key technologies, data, and infrastructures to reduce dependence on non-EU providers.
While Spain is a global leader in tourism, with 514 million overnight stays projected for 2025, much of the digital value is currently concentrated in international platforms. Three North American companies control approximately 70% of the tourism cloud market. To achieve technological sovereignty, experts suggest Spain must transform its industry experience into a capacity to generate competitive platforms, artificial intelligence, and data management services.
The European Union is already addressing this through the D3Hub Project, which aims to create a common European space for tourism data, with a headquarters approved for Andalusia. The challenge lies in creating a management model that utilizes predictive intelligence and data control to drive decision-making for destinations and businesses without relying entirely on external providers.
