Spain eyes 2026 World Cup with potential nationality switches and fit squad

Eleven footballers born in Spain are being linked with the possibility of representing other national teams at the 2026 World Cup. Their choices could be driven by greater playing opportunities, family heritage or the chance to join emerging football nations such as Brazil, Argentina, Morocco or Mexico. The moves would reflect FIFA’s rules allowing players to change national allegiance under certain conditions.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said that forward Lamine Yamal, winger Nico Williams and midfielder Mikel Merino are recovering from recent injuries and are expected to be available for the team’s opening Group H match against Canada on 15 June. He cautioned that selection for the first game may still be tactical. De la Fuente highlighted the demanding nature of the expanded 48‑team tournament, which will be hosted across Canada, the United States and Mexico, with long travel, varied climates and tight recovery times. He expects a flexible 26‑player squad rather than a fixed hierarchy to cope with these challenges.
