Spain faces aging vehicle fleet with average age at 14.6 years

Spain is characterized by an aging vehicle fleet, with the national average age of passenger cars reaching 14.6 years in 2025. Data from the DGT and ANFAC (Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers) indicates that nearly one-third of vehicles in the country are over 20 years old.

This average is higher than the European Union average of 12.7 years, according to ACEA. The disparity in vehicle age varies significantly by province. José López-Tafall, Director General of ANFAC, described the situation as “preocupante” (concerning).

The aging fleet raises concerns regarding environmental emissions, pollution levels, road safety, and the pace of technological renewal, particularly regarding modern driving assistance systems.
