Spain faces calls for State Pact to combat forest fires

Following a severe summer of wildfires, calls are growing for a State Pact in Spain to improve forest fire prevention and extinction efforts. Despite demonstrations by over 3,000 forest and environmental firefighters in Madrid a year ago, critics argue that insufficient progress has been made regarding professional improvements for firefighters and the implementation of comprehensive preventive plans.

The proposed State Pact would aim to build a broad social consensus involving central, regional, and local administrations, as well as political parties, unions, scientists, and civil society. A central tenet of the proposal is the principle that ‘fires are extinguished in winter,’ emphasizing the need for proactive prevention rather than reactive measures. The initiative seeks to end budget cuts and ensure all autonomous communities have sufficient funding and resources, specifically addressing the precarious and temporary nature of firefighting brigades.
