Spain faces criticism over slow trials in gender‑based murder cases

The family of Ramy Virginia Taccarelli, a 41‑year‑old Venezuelan woman murdered in the village of Ruguilla, Guadalajara in June 2025, marked the first anniversary of her death by demanding justice. Her brother Reinaldo Taccarelli said, "We have bought flowers to pay tribute to her. We are sad, emotionally moved," and lamented that the case remains in the instruction phase despite the perpetrator’s confession. The family fears the prolonged trial will extend their suffering and may have to request a court‑appointed lawyer because they cannot afford legal costs.

In Almería, prosecutors have asked for a 25‑year prison term for José T. V., accused of brutally stabbing his partner, María Nieves Gamarra, to death in October 2024. The indictment cites gender‑based violence, a pattern of control and previous protection orders, and describes the attack as a premeditated plan that left the victim defenseless. The court will hear the case in July, and the prosecution also seeks ten years of supervised release and a 30‑year prohibition on contact with the victim’s daughter.
