Spain faces deadly flooding and torrential rains

Torrential rains and flooding have struck the eastern Iberian Peninsula, causing significant damage and loss of life. Experts indicate that the combination of climate change, Mediterranean climate characteristics, and regional morphology is intensifying these extreme weather events.

In Catalonia, which was the hardest-hit region, three of the four total deaths reported across the affected areas occurred. The south of Tarragona was among the most severely impacted zones. In Albacete, specifically in Madrigueras, 90 rescues were carried out following a fatality.

Other affected regions include the Valencian Community, where rainfall reached 140 liters per square meter in Castellón and classes were canceled for over 400,000 students, and Murcia, where rainfall exceeded 100 liters per square meter. Impacts were also noted in Almería, Granada, and Jaén. The government of Castilla-La Mancha has approved a request to declare the affected municipalities as a catastrophic zone.
