Spain faces divergent fiscal outlooks amid market speculation and structural challenges
Goldman Sachs reports that markets are pricing in a potential future government led by the PP and Vox in Spain, which could lead to greater fiscal consolidation. Analysts suggest that a post-electoral majority could strengthen fiscal stability and support debt reduction, with a central scenario projecting the debt-to-GDP ratio to fall to 95% by 2030. This contrasts with other major economies like France, Germany, and the United States, where debt is expected to rise.
Separately, the Instituto de Estudios Económicos (IEE) highlights structural challenges in Spain's fiscal system. Despite high tax rates for companies and workers, total tax revenue remains below the European average at approximately 37% of GDP. The IEE attributes this to a narrow tax base caused by high unemployment rates and lower average wages compared to other European economies, which limits the number of taxpayers and overall consumption-based revenue.
