Spain faces geopolitical isolation and security risks, warns former minister

Former Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo has raised concerns regarding Spain’s current geopolitical standing. Speaking in Gijón during the first Hispanic Heritage Week, García-Margallo suggested that Spain has become “alone and isolated” in certain international contexts, specifically noting a lack of alignment with NATO’s calls to increase military spending.

García-Margallo criticized the current administration under Pedro Sánchez, alleging that the Prime Minister has damaged relations with the United States by positioning himself as a nemesis to Donald Trump. He also advocated for revitalizing Ibero-American summits to foster cooperation and emphasized the growing importance of Hispanic influence in the U.S.

Complementary analysis of Spain’s national security suggests the country may be drifting away from traditional Western strategic lines. This shift could place Spain in a vulnerable position “between two fires” regarding defense and foreign policy. Concerns were noted regarding the management of the Strait of Gibraltar, suggesting a potential decline in Spain’s responsibility to ensure free circulation in this strategic maritime zone, despite its critical importance in global trade and security.
