Argentine opposition requests special session on debt and disability

Opposition blocs in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies have formally requested a special session for September 9 to address two critical issues: the extension of the disability emergency and the widespread indebtedness of families involving banks and credit cards.

Multiple opposition parties, including Unión por la Patria, Provincias Unidas, and the Frente de Izquierda, have coordinated this effort, having previously gathered 133 votes to attempt to include these topics. This move signals a growing level of parliamentary coordination against the administration of Javier Milei.

In response, the ruling party, La Libertad Avanza, has moved to block the session. The Presidency of the Chamber has instead called for an informative meeting of the Finance Commission on September 2 to discuss the 34 projects related to family debt. Opposition legislators have criticized this maneuver as a “distracting measure” and a “smoke screen” intended to delay the legislative process and prevent the items from reaching the floor.
