Spain faces investment slowdown amid political uncertainty
Major international investment funds are pausing significant projects in Spain due to heightened political uncertainty. Industry sources indicate that private equity and infrastructure investors are adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach, citing instability regarding political pacts, the absence of a regular state budget, and recent tensions with the EU and NATO.
This climate of caution is impacting major corporate transactions. For instance, the sale of Restaurant Brands Europe—the operator of Burger King, Popeyes, and Tim Hortons in Spain and other Southern European markets—has faced complications. The British private equity firm Cinven reportedly lowered its asking price from 2.5 billion euros to 2.1 billion euros for the asset, while the American parent company, Restaurant Brands International, has halted the operation.
Investors are reportedly waiting for greater clarity on the political landscape and are expressing preference for a more business-friendly environment with lower taxes and fewer regulatory hurdles. This trend is reflected in declining foreign capital inflows compared to 2018 levels.
