Spain faces landfill fire and calls for improved wildfire protection

A fire broke out at a landfill in Lloret de Mar on Saturday, August 15. Nine firefighting units from the Bombers de la Generalitat were deployed to manage the blaze, which focused on accumulated waste within the facility. To prevent the fire from spreading to nearby vegetation, firefighters utilized heavy machinery to move waste and access internal combustion points. The Agrupacions de Defensa Forestal also assisted in protecting surrounding forest areas. No personal injuries were reported.

In a separate context regarding wildfire management, officials at Collserola Natural Park are proposing updates to fire protection protocols following recent incidents, including a fire on August 14 that burned at least 10 hectares. Joan Vilamú, head of territorial action for the park, suggested expanding the current 25-meter vegetation-free protection zones around residential areas to better prevent forest fires from reaching homes. Additionally, experts are calling for technical upgrades to firefighting helicopter bases and water collection systems to improve operational efficiency.
