Spain faces loss of urban heritage and historical identity
Historical studies document the loss of visual memory in many Spanish cities during the 1960s and 1970s due to the destruction of historical centers. During this period, local political authorities oversaw the systematic annihilation of architectural and artistic heritage in the name of economic transformation.
While current laws partially restrict such destruction, a new trend has emerged where public spaces and traditional urban life are being converted into commodities. This shift is driven by a focus on tourism, which critics argue fossilizes urban environments and displaces local citizens. This process results in the loss of traditional neighborhoods, markets, and local commerce, replacing them with a standardized aesthetic designed for consumption.
