Spain faces plasma shortage for essential medicines

Spain is facing a deficit in plasma supplies required to produce essential medicines, such as immunoglobulins, which are vital for patients with serious illnesses. While the country maintains sufficient blood levels for transfusions, experts at a Funcas webinar highlighted that voluntary donations are currently insufficient to meet the growing medical demand for plasma-derived products.

In response to these needs, the Community of Madrid has launched its first mobile plasma donation unit. The 'Bus Plasma' is designed to travel between hospitals and primary care centers to promote altruistic donation. The unit is equipped with four extraction machines and is part of the 'En tu plasma hay mucha vida' campaign. In the Madrid region alone, approximately 6,000 patients rely on plasma-derived medications to survive.
