Spain faces political divide over bullfighting subsidies and status

Political tensions regarding bullfighting subsidies and cultural status are intensifying in Spain. In the national parliament, the Sumar coalition has presented a non-legislative proposal to the Congress of Deputies. This initiative seeks to withdraw all public support for bullfighting, including subsidies and awards, and calls for the conversion of bullfighting spaces. Sumar also advocates for reviewing agricultural aid to prevent the indirect financing of bullfighting through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and requests a detailed report on all public funds, including European funds, allocated to the sector.

In the region of Extremadura, the PP-Vox coalition government has taken a different approach by increasing the bullfighting budget by 500%, bringing it to 1.78 million euros. The regional government is also moving to declare bullfighting a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) to protect it from ideological challenges. This budget increase coincides with a significant 87% reduction in the budget for international cooperation, which has prompted criticism from opposition parties and NGOs regarding the reallocation of public funds.
