Spain economic pressure: rising housing costs and declining household savings
Spanish households are facing significant economic pressure due to rising costs in housing, food, and seasonal expenses. While housing prices saw a 0% monthly change in August, the year-on-year increase remains high at 14.9%, with significant growth in coastal and urban areas.
According to the Unión de Créditos Inmobiliarios (UCI), average monthly savings for Spanish families have fallen to approximately 300 euros, representing about 16.2% of income. To maintain this, many households are cutting spending on leisure, travel, and food. The rising cost of basic goods, such as eggs, which have increased by up to 85% since 2021, further strains domestic budgets.
Additionally, seasonal spikes in spending, such as back-to-school costs, are adding to the burden. Experts suggest that while families focus on small daily savings, reviewing mortgage conditions in response to European Central Bank movements could offer more substantial long-term financial relief.
