Spain faces rising grocery prices as summer holidays end

As summer holidays end in Spain, consumers face rising costs for essential groceries. Despite supermarket efforts to offer discounts, food, beverage, and tobacco prices are expected to be higher than last year. Preliminary Consumer Price Index (CPI) data shows a 2.4% annual increase in August, with beef and eggs seeing significant price hikes in July.

According to the supermarket association Asedas, September is expected to see a surge in demand for specific goods: legumes by 36%, temperate vegetables by 50%, meat by 10%, and fresh fish by 5.5%. Additionally, online grocery shopping is seeing a seasonal spike, with approximately half of online shoppers using the channel to schedule large, heavy orders upon their return home.

Enrique García of the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) noted that economic uncertainties, including rising fuel costs due to conflict in the Middle East and electricity price fluctuations, may impact the food supply chain. These costs are often passed on to consumers, particularly for essential goods with rigid demand, such as milk.
