Spain faces rising labor absenteeism and economic costs

Spain is facing a significant rise in labor absenteeism, which is impacting economic competitiveness and increasing the costs for businesses. Recent reports indicate that approximately 1.6 million employees are absent from their responsibilities on any given day, representing a national average of 7.6%. In certain regions, such as the Basque Country, the Canary Islands, and Cantabria, the rate reaches 9.6%.

The estimated cost of lost hours has surged to over 59 billion euros, nearly double the amount recorded in 2019. While the majority of these absences are attributed to temporary disability (IT) due to illness or injury, the lack of a clear definition for absenteeism in the Workers' Statute complicates the debate.

Discussions regarding the issue are often polarized between employers, who cite concerns over productivity and organizational stability, and unions, who argue that the problem is often magnified by political discourse. The rise in absenteeism is also linked to shifts in the labor market and challenges within the healthcare system that delay worker recovery.
