Spain faces rising police corruption and Russian naval monitoring
Prosecutors in Spain have warned of rising police corruption driven by the influence of organized crime. During the La Toja Forum, experts noted that criminal groups use significant financial resources to recruit law enforcement officers to gain intelligence on ongoing investigations and evade justice.
A specific case involves a Guardia Civil lieutenant under investigation for allegedly collaborating with drug traffickers to facilitate cocaine smuggling in Muxía. Prosecutors, including the head of the Special Anti-Drug Prosecution, emphasized that the increasing ability of criminals to bribe officials poses a major threat to anti-narcotics efforts.
In separate maritime developments, the Spanish Navy patrol vessel ‘Centinela’ (P-72) conducted surveillance operations along the Galician coast. The vessel monitored four Russian Navy units, including two military vessels escorting two merchant ships, as they passed through Spain’s Exclusive Economic Zone as part of maritime presence and deterrence operations.
