Changing climate patterns in Spain, characterized by milder winters and prolonged heat, are creating ideal conditions for the spread of invasive mosquito species. Entomologist Roger Eritja, a member of the Mosquito Alert platform, notes that the combination of heat and abundant water facilitates mosquito proliferation.

There are currently three invasive species present in Spain: the tiger mosquito, the Japanese mosquito, and the yellow fever mosquito. The tiger mosquito has shown an expanded period of activity, stretching into late autumn and early spring due to benign temperatures. Urban species like the tiger mosquito are closely linked to standing water in domestic containers.

From a public health perspective, the tiger mosquito and the yellow fever mosquito are particularly concerning. These species are efficient transmitters of serious diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and West Nile virus.
