Spain faces security challenges from narcolanchas and mass migration

Spanish authorities are facing significant challenges regarding maritime security and mass migration. In El Portús, Mayor Noelia Arroyo has denounced the permanent arrival of high-powered narcolanchas used by organized crime for trafficking drugs, weapons, and people. Arroyo reported that the only operational Guardia Civil vessel capable of pursuing these advanced boats is currently out of service, leaving a gap in coastal surveillance.

This security concern follows a period of high-risk warnings from the National Police. A document from the National Center for Immigration and Borders (CENIF) had identified a ‘high risk’ of mass migration from North African coasts, including Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, a week before a major influx occurred. Despite these warnings, a massive crossing from Morocco to Ceuta on July 30 overwhelmed Guardia Civil resources, creating a humanitarian and security situation described as unprecedented since 2021.
