Spain faces shortage of electric car subsidies for up to 50,000 buyers

The government’s Plan Auto+ – part of the broader Plan España Auto 2030 – earmarks €400 million for electric‑vehicle purchase incentives in 2026. With an expected 150,000 electric cars to be sold this year, the average subsidy per vehicle would fall to about €2,600, well below the maximum €4,500 offered. Delays in fund allocation and early use of the money by manufacturers could exhaust the pool, potentially leaving up to 50,000 Spaniards without any aid.

The new board of the Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (Aedive) has called on the authorities for greater clarity and faster implementation of the scheme. It warns that uncertainty over the timing, management model, retroactivity, territorial distribution and possible carbon‑footprint criteria is creating a “wait effect” that hampers decisions by manufacturers, renters, charging‑operator firms and consumers. Aedive stresses the need to accelerate the rollout of high‑power, interoperable charging infrastructure and to harmonise standards across the electric‑mobility value chain.
