Spain faces shortage of hormone replacement therapies

Spain is experiencing a significant shortage of hormone replacement therapies (HRT) that has persisted since March. The shortage primarily affects estradiol spray, specifically the brand Lenzetto, due to issues with its diffuser. This scarcity has triggered a chain reaction, increasing demand for alternative treatments such as Evopad patches and Oestraclin gel, which has subsequently strained their availability.

The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Products (Aemps) has recorded supply issues affecting drugs used for menopause, premature ovarian failure, and hormone therapy for transgender women. Additionally, the drug Bijuva has faced supply restrictions due to the suspension of manufacturing and packaging activities, though production has since stabilized.

Medical professionals report that hundreds of thousands of women in Spain rely on these therapies to manage symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia, and genitourinary issues. While Aemps expects the supply of Lenzetto to normalize during November, patients continue to face difficulties locating essential medications in pharmacies.
