Spain faces unresolved legacy of mass graves from Civil War and dictatorship

Spain continues to face the unresolved legacy of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship, with approximately 6,000 documented mass graves and irregularities spread throughout the country. Between 114,000 and 130,000 people remain forcibly disappeared, buried in ditches, mine shafts, and ravines.

In the last 25 years, about 17,000 victims have been exhumed, but at least 12,000 bodies are still estimated to remain unrecovered. Notable sites include the Pico Reja in Seville, one of Europe's largest repression graves, and the Valle de los Caídos, where the remains of more than 500 graves from both sides were mixed without family consent.

The documentation of these events highlights the role of the military coup against a legitimate government and the external support provided by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, which were instrumental in Franco's survival.
