Spain falls short on EU electric‑car charging targets

The European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) sets a minimum public‑charging capacity per electric or plug‑in hybrid vehicle. Most member states have met or exceeded the required power‑per‑vehicle thresholds, especially in northern and central Europe.

Spain, however, is lagging. While some regions such as Madrid and Barcelona have a reasonable number of high‑power charging points, other areas like Extremadura and Cantabria remain underserved. According to analysis by T&E, an additional 22 high‑capacity public chargers are needed for Spain to satisfy the AFIR mandate.

The shortfall risks creating bottlenecks in the transition to zero‑emission mobility and could slow further adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
