Spain food prices rise for potatoes, pears, and macaroni

A study by Facua-Consumidores en Acción reveals significant price increases for several staple foods in Spanish supermarkets between July and August 2026. Potatoes saw the highest average increase at 14%, with Hipercor recording a 29.4% rise for five-kilogram bags. Conference pears increased by an average of 3.2%, with the sharpest rise of 20.3% noted at Carrefour.

Macaroni prices rose by an average of 3%, including a 10% increase for the De Cecco brand at Carrefour. Other items experiencing price hikes include sunflower oil (2.8%), oranges (2.5%), iceberg lettuce (2.4%), wheat flour (1.8%), and whole milk (1.3%).

Conversely, some food prices decreased during this period. Notable declines were seen in white grapes (-18%), extra virgin olive oil (-6%), lemons (-4.2%), carrots (-4.2%), eggs (-3.5%), and onions (-3.2%). On a year-over-year basis, eggs showed the highest increase at 8.7% between August 2025 and August 2026.
