Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernández de Cos emerge as ECB presidency contenders
The race to succeed Christine Lagarde as President of the European Central Bank (ECB) has narrowed to two primary candidates: Pablo Hernández de Cos of Spain and Klaas Knot of the Netherlands. Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis confirmed that these were the only two candidacies submitted by the Friday deadline.
Pablo Hernández de Cos, the current Director General of the Bank for International Settlements and former Governor of the Bank of Spain, is supported by the Spanish government. Minister of Economy Carlos Cuerpo formally submitted the candidacy, describing him as a leader with international prestige. Klaas Knot, the former Governor of the Dutch Central Bank, represents the Netherlands and is often characterized as a hawk favoring restrictive monetary policy.
Eurozone finance ministers are scheduled to discuss the candidates during a Eurogroup meeting in Brussels on November 9. The final decision rests with the European Council following consultations with the European Parliament and the ECB Governing Council. This process follows Lagarde's announcement of her early departure, which is scheduled for February 7, 2027.
