Spain receives backing from Gaza and US Palestinian fans for World Cup final

In Gaza, many residents have pledged support for Spain ahead of the World Cup final against Argentina, citing the Spanish government's recognition of the State of Palestine in May 2024 and public statements by Spanish athletes. Ahmed al‑Bozm, a 33‑year‑old Palestinian, said, “I’m completely behind Spain because they stood up for Palestine.” Former footballer Adnan al‑Afifi, who runs the Palestine Sports Club, organised World Cup‑themed exhibition matches despite chronic electricity shortages and fuel scarcity caused by the ongoing conflict.

Across the Atlantic, the Palestinian diaspora in New York’s Bay Ridge neighbourhood – nicknamed “Little Palestine” – echoed the same sentiment. Community leaders such as Zein Rimawi, chair of the Arab American Federation, and Talal Abdraboh of a local bakery, said they support Spain because of its political stance on Palestine. Both groups view the match as a “political summit” where sport and solidarity intersect.

The supporters’ enthusiasm is linked to Spain’s diplomatic move to recognise Palestine and its criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, turning the football contest into a platform for expressing broader political affiliations.
