Spain gears up for August 12 total solar eclipse with science hub and tourism push

Science Minister Diana Morant announced that Spain will host the official observation of the August 12 total solar eclipse at the Yebes Observatory in Guadalajara. The government is allocating resources to the institute, coordinating thirteen ministries and regional authorities to ensure safety, public outreach, and the participation of international astronomers. Morant emphasized the event as an opportunity to promote STEM education, safeguard observers, and showcase Spain’s astronomical facilities.

The eclipse is also being marketed as a tourism catalyst for the north‑west of the country. Regional officials, including the vice‑president of the Castile‑León patronage, are promoting the slogan “The sky has chosen us,” aiming to attract visitors and boost local economies during the rare celestial event.
