Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón prepares for Portugal showdown at World Cup 2026

Spain’s first‑choice goalkeeper Unai Simón spoke ahead of the round of 16 match against Portugal at the 2026 World Cup. He highlighted his 519‑minute World Cup clean‑sheet record, which eclipses Walter Zenga’s previous mark, and praised the defensive work of the team, especially the contributions of Lamine Yamal. Simón said Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer in his physical prime but remains a lethal threat in the penalty area and must be kept as far from the box as possible. He urged the side to replicate the level shown at Euro 2024 and noted that the three‑goalkeeper trio – Simón, David Raya and Joan García – are well prepared. Goalkeeper coach Miguel Ángel España added that Spain studies opponents’ penalty‑kick habits in detail to be ready for any shoot‑out. Simón also praised veteran Mexican keeper Guillermo Ochoa, calling it an honour to share the tournament with him.
