Spain: Graffiti honors housing activist María del Carmen Abascal

Spanish street artist TVBoy has created a graffiti tribute to María del Carmen Abascal, known as Maricarmen, following her death. The 87-year-old had become a symbol of the struggle for affordable housing in Spain after being evicted from her long-term rental apartment in central Madrid.

The artwork depicts Abascal in an angelic form, featuring a halo, wings, and a white robe, while holding a key that symbolizes both her lost home and traditional religious imagery.

Her eviction and subsequent death two weeks later have reignited protests and public debate regarding the housing crisis in Spain. The issue has become a significant political flashpoint as the country approaches national elections, highlighting the difficulties millions of Spaniards face in securing affordable housing.
