Spain grants asylum to Cuban journalist Luz Escobar

Spain has granted asylum to Cuban journalist Luz Escobar, her husband Julio Llópiz-Casal, and their daughters. The decision follows a nearly four-year period of uncertainty for the family.

The Spanish resolution officially recognizes Escobar as a refugee, citing the authoritarian nature of the Cuban regime. The document notes a lack of representative democracy, the absence of judicial independence, and a media landscape controlled by the state that targets independent journalists and activists.

Escobar, who worked with the independent outlet 14ymedio, reported facing systematic repression in Cuba, including surveillance, house arrests, and travel bans. The Spanish authorities concluded that her case meets the criteria established by the 1951 Geneva Convention, finding it credible that she was persecuted for her political opinions and professional work.
