Spain grape harvest accelerates due to extreme summer heat

The 2026 grape harvest across various Spanish wine regions is characterized by accelerated timelines and shifting yields due to extreme summer heat and drought.

In La Mancha, the harvest has reached its midpoint with a rapid pace driven by high temperatures since May. While production yields are decreasing for heat-sensitive varieties, producers report high fruit quality. Similarly, the Sierra de Salamanca is experiencing its earliest harvest on record, though producers face labor shortages.

In Rioja, the harvest has intensified significantly, with over 25 million kilograms collected, showing a strong trend toward red varieties. Other regions, including Rueda, Cigales, and the Ribera del Duero, are also seeing advanced ripening cycles. In Ribera del Duero, the harvest has moved up by approximately 15 days compared to historical norms, as high alcohol levels force earlier picking.

Despite the challenges of heat and varying yields, many regions report excellent sanitary conditions for the grapes, with some areas benefiting from winter rains that helped maintain plant reserves.
