Spain green hydrogen plant clears environmental hurdle as Mexico launches hydrogen boost for cement

A 100‑megawatt green hydrogen facility in Cartagena, Spain, promoted by Repsol and Enagás, received a favorable Environmental Impact Declaration, clearing a key step toward construction. The plant will use renewable electricity to produce about 15,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually, aiming to replace gray hydrogen in the nearby refinery and cut CO₂ emissions. The project, valued at over €300 million, includes a public grant of €155 million and is expected to create roughly 900 jobs.

In Mexico, Knergy Sustentable introduced its Hydrobooster ALK alkaline‑electrolysis system to inject hydrogen and oxygen into cement kilns, improving combustion efficiency and enabling greater use of alternative fuels. Tested in a pilot with Holcim, the technology could lower fuel consumption, boost production, and cut emissions, potentially saving $1‑3 million per plant each year.
