Spain heat wave cuts repeat tourist arrivals by 15%

A study by Caixabank analysing foreign card payments linked with EU Copernicus climate data found that extreme heat waves in Spain reduce the likelihood of repeat visits by roughly 15%. When temperature deviations exceed 8 °C above historical averages, the probability of returning the following year falls by about 13.8%. The research notes that even during a period of strong overall tourism demand – the government forecasts 43 million international arrivals this summer – heat‑driven discomfort erodes repeat‑visitor loyalty and subtly shifts travel dates and destinations.

At the same time, Spaniards are seeking cooler domestic alternatives. Media highlights natural swimming pools such as those in Arenas de San Pedro, Ávila, located about an hour and a half from Madrid, as popular weekend escapes from the soaring temperatures. These bio‑pools, built with natural filtration systems, offer a chemical‑free, water‑saving option for heat‑stricken holidaymakers.
