Spain honors Saint Teresa and Saint John of the Cross through cultural events

Various cultural and religious commemorations are taking place in Spain to honor the legacies of Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross.

In Alba de Tormes, events were held to mark the anniversary of Saint Teresa’s death. The program included liturgical services at the Basilica of the Annunciation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, musical performances by the Évano Clarinet Group and the Harmonía de Salamanca Vocal Chapel, and a traditional night visit to her cell.

Additionally, a theatricalized pilgrimage march connected the municipalities of Duruelo and Mancera de Abajo. Organized by the ‘De la Cuna al Sepulcro’ Teresian route, the event aimed to honor the origins of the Discalced Carmelites and the presence of Saint John of the Cross in the region.

Furthering the celebration of Saint John of the Cross, the itinerant exhibition ‘San Juan de la Cruz: Esperanza de Alto Vuelo’ has opened in Valencia. Originating in Alba de Tormes, the exhibition is part of the 2026 Sanjuanista Jubilee, commemorating the 300th anniversary of his canonization and the centenary of his proclamation as a Doctor of the Church.
