Spain housing protests erupt after Parliament rejects emergency decrees

Massive protests have erupted across Spain following the Spanish Parliament's rejection of two emergency housing decrees. The proposed measures, drafted by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government, aimed to protect vulnerable tenants from eviction and regulate lease renewals.

The demonstrations, which occurred in approximately 50 cities, were largely fueled by public outrage over the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, who had lived in her Madrid home for 70 years before being displaced following a rent hike by an investment fund. In Madrid, the government estimated 70,000 participants, while organizers claimed much higher figures. Clashes between protesters and police were reported in Valencia, where authorities used tear gas and rubber bullets.

The political fallout is significant, with opposition leaders calling for snap elections. Prime Minister Sánchez is reportedly evaluating whether to call early elections in November as he monitors the scale of the social unrest and the stability of his minority administration.
